Energy Saving Compact Fluorescent Technology, with a vintage
appearance! When historic Fort Worden in Port Townsend, WA decided their
Officers' Quarters lighting needed new wiring, we adapted several of
their period light fixtures to accept the latest, state-of-the-art
technology into their vintage housing. Six times more efficient than
incandescent lamps, these carry an Energy Star 4 approval.
There are two main types of fluorescent lighting used with antique
style fixtures. One is the curly bulb that can be screwed into normal
base sockets. These bulbs are made by over 500 factories with little
quality control, and they have no Energy Star rating. The newest type
of bulb is now precision controlled by an electronic chip, and is
called the Electronic compact fluorescent , or ECF . The ECF has a
wider range of color temperature bulbs available. ECF bulbs are rated
at 12,000 hours life, while "curly bulbs" are usually rated at 2500
hours. With electronic ballast micro circuitry, ECF has "instant on".
For larger wattage bulbs, you can expect only 15 seconds to full
brightness. Unless your visitors peek under the shade, they'll never
know you have high-end efficiency in the heirloom-quality fixture.
