Electric lights were phased in as more areas acquired power, from the late 1880's through the turn of the century. Often a home would have both gas (upward facing gas glass shades ) and electric lights (downward facing glass shades , 2 1/4" fitter size). This was called transitional lighting , and it was made over 20 years, until folks were certain that electricity was safe, reliable, and practical. These 2 1/4" glass shades are still a standard size today.
