900-ARG-ES Polished Unlacquered Brass Gaslight Reproduction Greek Revival Mercury Head Wall Sconce
900-ARG-DK Antique Brass Finish Neoclassical Replica Mercury Head Gaslight Wall Sconce
A Neo-Grecian wall sconce attributed to Mitchell-Vance of the period 1870 - 1880. Attribution by identical gas key and backplate in the Dover re-print of the 1876 catalog, plate 74.
Figural decorated lighting, which was so popular during the 1850's, continued to linger in popularity right into the 1870's as can be attested to by the reprint of Mitchell-Vance's catalog of 1876 (available from Dover).
Greek and Roman themes continued to be a popular decorative motif. With this sconce we see a winged helmeted figure, who must be Mercury (Greek: Hermes). He was the messenger of the ancient gods. Made completely by Lost Wax Casting, the detail is outstanding.
Overall Height: 16" (including ball shade)
Overall Projection: 10" from the wall, including the ball shade.
Backplate: 4 1/4" in diameter.
Wattage: Single Brass socket, rated for up to 100 watts.
Glass shades are sold separately. Choice of eleven 2 5⁄8" fitter glass shades available. We picture 0162G (in the polished unlacquered brass sconce picture), or 061G (in the Antique Brass Finish sconce picture) as suggestions. This sconce would also be an excellent showpiece for that antique gas shade that you may have in storage!
If you'd like to add an On/Off switch to the base, we offer custom installation for only $25.00. Please click the "Yes" option in the "Add Switch?" menu above to add the switch to your cart.
Pair this with our fabulous full-figure sconce, and newel post light of the winged messenger for a great taste of Victoriana. These two are pictured here also. We also offer the mythological figure Zeus chandelier and Hera chandeliers, and a figural door knocker. Set a dramatic tone right at your entry with our griffin door plates. Pictured here also is a favorite - the Phoenix sconce.
