Lovely pair of Circa 1920 wall sconces. Original antique backplates and original antique shades.
These sconces have a formal Edwardian ambiance having a pewter look but with a more restrained backplate design that is so typical of the Edwardian design style. Almost reminds you of an Art Nouveau, but, not quite.
The original antique shades are simply unique. We believe them to be English as they are made of the finest glass, and then, hand decorated with a bit of decal and painted designs. We believe the shades to be English since the mounting hole has a metal adapter to convert the hole normally used in England for their bayonet pin socket, to our American method of slipin shades used at this time. Being antiques, there is a place where there are very MINOR flakes to the shades. It is normal 90 year weartear and so very minor, but we have to mention it.
The metal, of the backplates, is cast zinc and aluminum with a lovely pewter finish. Ready to go...nothing needs to be done except add the light bulbs of your choice. These sconces have been completely rewired with true bakelite sockets and all new wire. We have also replaced the switches, made by Leviton in the 20's...and still made up to ONE year ago. So these switches, by Leviton are becoming even more antique as we note this.We suggest using our neat little LED bulb 45G-E26 (picture below) if these sconces are for ambiance and less than full room light. This little 2 watt bulb produces almost as much light as a 25 watt incandescent bulb but only nibbles at the electricity. AND....it lasts 30,000 hours. We suggest it to prevent a bulb peeking over the rim of the shade. Just a final, nicer, touch.
